Streaming powerhouse Netflix has acquired the rights to Federico D’Alessandro’s sci-fi thriller Tau in a global deal that excludes China. The news of the deal was made during the American Film Market by Bloom, according to Deadline.

The movie stars Maika Monroe, Ed Skrein, and Gary Oldman and tells the story of a woman who is held captive in a futuristic smart house and hopes to escape by breaking into the computer programs that control the house. The advanced artificial intelligence that controls the house goes by the name of Tau, which has been developed by her creepy captor Alex, played by Skrein.

IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for director brothers Brendan & Emmett Malloy’s new film The Tribes of Palos Verdes, a surf drama about “young Medina” who “attempts to surf her way to happiness.” If that logline doesn’t make your eyes roll, some of the “life is tough” footage in this trailer definitely will.

Though it actually doesn’t look as bad as it sounds. The Tribes of Palos Verdes stars Maika Monroe as Medina, a young surfer woman from Palos Verdes, as well as Jennifer Garner as her mom, plus Cody Fern, Alicia Silverstone, Noah Silver, Elisabeth Rohm, Goran Visnjic, Justin Kirk and Joely Fisher. This looks like it’s packed full of drama galore. It is “set amidst the sun-kissed beaches and crystal blue waters of the California coast” which may be enough to get a few folks into theaters.

Here’s the trailer (and screencaps) …

Jennifer Garner and Maika Monroe are celebrating their upcoming film The Tribes of Palos Verdes. The co-stars stepped out at the Hamptons International Film Festival on Friday evening (October 6th) at the UA2 East Hampton Cinema 6 in East Hampton, New York.

The film, based on the book of the same name, follows the Mason family’s move to idyllic Palos Verdes, California. The family has mixed reactions to their new environment and daughter Medina attempts to escape the volatile situation by surfing her way to happiness.

The Tribes of Palos Verdes is set to hit theaters on December 1st.

Maika Monroe has joined Chloe Grace Moretz and Isabelle Huppert in The Widow, the Neil Jordan-directed thriller for Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Ray Wright (The Crazies) wrote the script. SKE, Lawrence Bender, James Flynn and Karen Richards are producing.

Moretz plays Frances, a young woman who returns an elderly widow’s lost purse, leading to an unlikely relationship between the two — until the young woman discovers her elder might not be all that she seems and that she’s downright dangerous. Monroe will play Erica, Frances’ protective best friend who is living large on her father’s dime and helps her college pal acclimate to the city.

Monroe is coming off the genre hit It Follows. She’s repped by WME and Management 360. Wright is Verve and Fourth Wall Management. Sierra/Affinity will represent foreign sales, and CAA and WME Global will co-represent the film domestically.

Liam Neeson has spent the better part of the past decade saving relatives from nefarious bad guys — and himself, from wolves — in a series of action vehicles including Taken, Run All Night, and The Grey. He’ll be taking on a different sort of heroic mission for his latest venture, however, as he’s set to star in the upcoming Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House, a based-on-real-events drama in which he plays the FBI agent who leaked information about the Watergate investigation to Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward as “Deep Throat.” With an all-star cast, it could make some award-season noise when it debuts next month — and now, with the release of its first trailer (watch it above).

Sporting gray hair and a no-nonsense demeanor (of course!), Neeson is front and center in the above promo as Felt, whose position in the bureau — he’s referred to as “The G-Man’s G-Man” — puts him smack in the middle of the inquiry into the Watergate break-in. That assignment is quickly complicated by the fact that the FBI’s bigwigs want to stop looking into the incident before they’ve truly begun, which puts Felt at odds with many of his compatriots — and soon sends him on an anonymous-source course that ultimately will alter the nation’s political landscape.

Directed by Peter Landesman (Concussion) and co-starring Diane Lane, Marton Csokas, Ike Barinholtz, Tony Goldwyn, Bruce Greenwood, Michael C. Hall, Brian d’Arcy James, Josh Lucas, Eddie Marsan, and Maika Monroe, Mark Felt: The Man Who Brought Down the White House arrives in theaters on Sept. 29.
